 Lampwork

Lampwork beads are made from rods of soft glass. The glass is melted in an oxygen/propane flame and wound round a stainless steel rod (mandrel), specially prepared so that the glass does not stick to the metal. Base beads are then decorated using a variety of techniques.

The bead is placed into a kiln at just over 500°c for annealing, then cooled slowly to room temperature. After removal from the mandrel the holes in each bead are reamed to clean the hole thoroughly. With sympathetic care they are extremely durable and will last for many years, but if dropped or knocked they may break. Handle with care!
